CBI Submits Investigation Report
On July 11, 2024, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) submitted its investigation report to the Supreme Court concerning the NEET-UG 2024 paper leak case. This report was presented in a sealed cover at around 9:45 am, providing critical insights into the investigation’s findings.
Centre’s Stance on Alleged Mass Malpractice
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has firmly denied any widespread malpractice in the NEET-UG 2024 examination. In an affidavit submitted to the Supreme Court, the NTA referenced data analytics conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras. The analysis, according to the NTA, found no indications of mass malpractice or any localized group of candidates benefiting in a way that would lead to abnormal scores.
The Centre further assured that the NEET-UG 2024 counselling process will proceed as scheduled, with four rounds starting from the third week of July. The NTA emphasized that any candidate found to have benefitted from malpractice would face cancellation of their candidature at any stage of the counselling process or even thereafter.
NTA Addresses Allegations of Leaked Paper
Responding to allegations circulating on social media, particularly on Telegram, about photos of the leaked paper, the NTA asserted that these videos were fake and manipulated. To support their claim, the NTA detailed their analysis of the marks distribution among NEET-UG 2024 candidates at the national, state, city, and centre levels. The findings showed a normal distribution of marks, indicating no external factors influencing the scores.
The affidavit from the NTA was submitted just a day before the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the 43 petitions regarding the paper leak case. These petitions, filed from various parts of the country, have been consolidated and transferred to the Supreme Court for a comprehensive hearing.
Background on NEET-UG Exam 2024
The NEET-UG examination, conducted by the NTA, serves as a gateway for admissions into MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other related courses across government and private institutions in India. On June 13, the Centre and the NTA informed the Supreme Court about the cancellation of grace marks previously awarded to 1,563 candidates. These candidates had appeared for the examination, which was held on May 5 across 4,750 centres with around 24 lakh participants.
The examination results, initially expected on June 14, were announced on June 4 due to the expedited evaluation of answer sheets. The issue of grace marks, which had been awarded due to a loss of time during the exam, has since been resolved. The Supreme Court accepted the NTA’s submission of the scorecards of the affected candidates, who were given the option to either retake the exam or proceed with the counselling process based on their actual marks without normalization.
Conclusion
The NEET-UG 2024 paper leak case has garnered significant attention, highlighting concerns over the integrity of one of India’s most crucial medical entrance examinations. As the Supreme Court prepares to hear the numerous petitions, the outcome will have far-reaching implications for the candidates involved and the overall conduct of the NEET-UG examination. The court’s decision will be pivotal in ensuring that the process remains fair and transparent, upholding the standards of one of the country’s most competitive exams.
