US Security Adviser Jake Sullivan Meets with Jaishankar in Delhi, Talks Bilateral and Global Affairs
Jake Sullivan, the US National Security Advisor, arrived in India on Monday, marking the first official engagement between the Biden administration and New Delhi since the recent change in government. Sullivan, accompanied by a high-level delegation, met with India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in the national capital. Their discussions encompassed a broad spectrum of topics, including bilateral, regional, and global concerns.
The meeting took place shortly after the extradition of Indian national Nikhil Gupta from the Czech Republic, who faces allegations related to a conspiracy against Khalistan leader Gurupatwant Singh Pannun. While it is unclear whether Gupta’s case was specifically discussed during the meeting, sources familiar with the matter indicated that it would be addressed appropriately.
During his visit, Sullivan also engaged with Ajit Doval, India’s National Security Advisor, focusing on the progress of the iCET initiative. This initiative, a cornerstone of US-India cooperation on Critical and Emerging Technologies, underscores mutual interests in areas such as semiconductors, telecommunications, artificial intelligence, and defense.
The discussions between Sullivan and Indian officials were preceded by a phone call between US President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where they discussed Sullivan’s forthcoming visit. The agenda also encompassed ongoing defense collaborations, including the strategic partnership between GE Aerospace and India’s Hindustan Aeronautics for the production of advanced F414 jet engines.
Additionally, the talks included deliberations on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), a significant infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing connectivity and economic integration among partner nations.
The IMEC initiative, conceived during the G20 Summit in Delhi, seeks to establish extensive road, rail, and maritime networks linking Saudi Arabia, India, the United States, and Europe. It also envisions infrastructure for electricity transmission, hydrogen pipelines, and high-speed data cables, fostering economic growth and strategic cooperation among participating countries.
This corridor initiative is viewed as a counterbalance to China’s Belt and Road Initiative, addressing concerns over transparency and sovereignty that have been raised regarding the latter’s extensive connectivity projects spanning Asia, Europe, and beyond.
